Happy New Year 2009

Wishing this blog.. and those who used to write here.. a Blessed New Year... I hope it has been quite a rewarding year for you as it was for me.. except that few bumps..but sure.. we would not have learnt anything if it is not for that few bumps right... we should embrace problems.. and not curse them I'd say...

It has been an interesting year for me.. mainly because I dont have a clue as to rules of working in Malaysia... or rather could not be bothered about them.. Sasaran Kerja Tahunan and my CPD( Continuous Performance Development) are the two main thing that you need to keep on updating.. really affects your anjakan gaji overall and it will also determine if you could join their master programme in the near future.. so there goes my career... dont know what's wrong with me..

Anyway.. shouldnt rant too much here.. afterall this is not my personal blog.. but I hope this blog wont just die off.. So... people.. have a good year... may all your plans... & hopes come true...

A toast to Mel

Kudos to Mel. Working in Malaysia is not easy. It's stressful. I can't take it working here. I can't imagine how bad it is back home. A few more months and you'll be MO. Don't bully your juniors. I might be one of them. ;)

This blog looks dead. Thanks Mel for your update. Really appreciate it. Nice to know that you're still up and about. I wonder what's the story with our NN?

I'm into my eighth month of working. No comment really.

Working in Malaysia

Working in Malaysia can be quite an experience for those who have never worked in Malaysia. I had my first CULTURE SHOCK in Malaysia-not in Ireland. I was shocked to learn that I had to work for almost 14 hours a day; I was dumbfounded when I heard that that I would have to do three times a day round on my own, and on top of that, I would have to follow my MO to go on rounds.. the Q is, when do I get to do the ward job? Plenty of documentation here-it is important alright but how many times do you need to review your patients?? Nothing is going to happen if you do not carry out the ward job?! Reviewing the same patients with no new results will not make any difference either.

There are about 18 of us housemans working under Obs and Gynae Department in Likas Hospital. Each of us will be assigned to a place for a week or two depending on our seniority:

  • Patient Assessment Centre: This place is equivalent to Casualty-8 beds in total-we see all sort of obstetric patients here-those in labour, those whose complaints include leaking liquor, preterm contraction, preterm labour, breech in labour, twins in labour, reduced fetal movement, postdates for IOL, placenta praevia-bleeding or stable, PIH, preeclampsia etc-3 housemans here
  • Obstetric Ward (K1 and K2): Each ward can accommodate at least 50 patients each-15 acute beds and the rest are normal beds-3 housemans on each ward
  • High Dependency Unit: The most senior Houseman will be assigned to look after the almost dead patients
  • Oncology Ward: It is obvious.. Oncology patients-2 housemans here
  • Gynae Ward: THE WORST ward ever-those who are assigned here need to start their rounds at 5.00am so that all patients will be reviewed by the time the specialist do his round at 7.00 in the morning. Madness! - 2 housemans ONLY
  • Clinic: You have to review mothers in Rooming in (Those mothers who are allowed home but had to stay because their babies are not well enough to return home) and then attend patients in the Clinic..2 housemans
  • Labour ROOM: The most important place-where you need to monitor both mother and fetus- 2 housemans
  • OT: 2 housemans to assist Gynae and Maternity OT..
Madness right?

We do work over the weekend-those who are assigned to look after patients in the wards.. We have to do Every Other Day calls-EOD calls you call it. I had to do mine-ten in a row- Wed, Fri, Sun, Tues, Thurs, Sat, Mon, Wed, Fri and Sun! I was so exhausted by the end of my tenth EOD and I had to assist the most obsessive specialist that morning! I almost fell asleep in the theatre!

I was given day off on Christmas Day and New Year's Day-but I spent those two days in bed-recuperating. I got my weekend off this week so I made plans with my colleague to go out for a dinner and the movie-and we did. Saw The Game-Chick Flick sort of thing.. The Rock was active. Not too bad but I would not watch it again-that sort of movie.

Alright.. I thought I should write something.. the blog is almost dead by now.. Annie, KJ, Fla and Clifford.. Come on people.. update please! Stay in touch... Stace and Sumi are more than welcome to post too!

Back in Malaysia for Good

Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu

I was just reading through the chatbox and fla mentioned about this dying blog.. someone should write something though.. Annie.. why not update us with your interesting life in the States.. and hows your preparation getting on?

I am back for good.. it has been a month since I came back.. hating the humid weather of Malaysia, the kiasuness of Malaysians esp both passengers of Air Asia and MAS.. they wont even give way to families travelling with children and senior citizen passengers! I mean.. are they really suffering for congenitally deficient common sense? Ah well.. I guess I just have to accept the fact that Malaysians are like dat.. Hmm..what else.. loving most of the food in Malaysia-thanks to some of my friends.. who showed me around.. Stacey and KJ included. Loving Burger Ramly.. too bad there is none in KK (thats where I am right now)

So.. on August, the 1st, I had to pay 200 GBP for excess baggage in London Heathrow; I couldn't sleep at all throughout the flight journey and later, I was annoyed at those MAS passengers who boarded the flight before families travelling with children and senior citizen passengers. A week was spent on trying to figure out how to fill in application form -MMC.. which is which; then I went to KL to meet up friends and also attended Parvez's wedding; back to Miri.. gone to KK..met up with Sumi.. hehe and we ate at this revolving restaurant..Yayasan Sabah..then mom had surgery-all went well, she is doing her physio now-Day 10. Basically thats that.. nothing much going on here..

Tried applying to UNIMAS but they refuse to take freshies so I was told to work with the ministry of health for at least a year before joining them-hence the application with SPA/Ministry of Health. I am also applying to HUKM and UITM.. will keep you guys posted if you are interested to know la right? Anyways.. stay in touch (Macam email kan) and text me when you're free: Its +60 16 296 1117
